Post-doc position (2009-08-24)

Project title: Biodiversity and ecology of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi associated to extremophile ecosystems: the example of copper-cobalt outcrops in Katanga (Democratic Republic of Congo)

Job description: In Katanga (Democratic Republic of Congo), cupric ills (rich in copper and cobalt) represent unique ecosystems endangered by industrial activity (mining). More than 500 plant species have been described in the last years among which 40 are endemic to these ills.

Yet, no information is available on the microbial flora associated to these ills and in particular on arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. These organisms play key roles in plant establishment and protection against a number of abiotic constraints.

The general objective of the project is to investigate the biodiversity and ecology of AM fungi associated to the extremophile ecosystems of Katanga.

Activities will include

? isolation, cultivation, preservation of AM fungi
? identification of AM fungi (taxolastnamey) via classical and molecular tools and phylogeny
? ecology within-field (functional ecology of communities ? plant diversity)

Criteria for recruitment of Post-doc will be
? High grade academic curriculum vitae in most appropriate discipline
? Expertise in taxolastnamey, phylogeny and/or ecology of AM fungi
? Having already a good record of publications
? interest and motivation in conducting the research activity
? interest in mobility
? curiosity
? agreeable personality and integration capacity within teams
